Teaching Experience
Secondary English Teacher, Syracuse Academy of Science, August 2017-Present
Secondary English Teacher, Deerfield Beach High School, October 2016- June 2017
I work with all grades to improve reading comprehension and literary analysis skills in fiction and nonfiction text. Each lesson is Common Core Standard based and differentiated based on the composition of each class period. Both Deerfield Beach High School and Syracuse Academy of Science are Title I school located in urban districts. I have taught a variety of courses from English 1 to AP English Literature and Composition. I also teach an elective course, Contemporary literature; students in this course examine modern texts, contemporary issues, and contemporary literary thought.
Adjunct Instructor, Department of English, Palm Beach State College Boca Campus, August 2015- Present
Graduate Teaching Assistant/Adjunct Instructor, Department of English, Florida International University, August 2012-May 2014
Courses Taught at FIU and PBCC
ENC 1101/College Composition I: The first of a 2-course sequence in college composition. This course generally focuses on developing skills in rhetorical knowledge and argumentation. Students are asked to reflect on rhetorical tools they use every day to create compelling messages and apply those skills in academic settings. My courses add an additional component of critical reading skills and strategies to encourage students to see their interactions as writers and readers as entering into a conversation.
ENC 1102/College Composition II: This course expands upon 1101 by asking students to emphasize research and continue their practice in critical reading. The course focuses on locating, evaluating and documenting sources and allows students to practice incorporating what they have found into their work in a way that supports their argument and purpose.
LIT 2090/Contemporary Literature: At Palm Beach State College, this course highlights literature from 1945 onward and focuses on work within the students’ own time. My course aims explicitly to survey texts from a variety of genres which were written within the last four decades. The texts will be accompanied by an introduction to select schools of literary thought such as critical race theory and structuralism. The course will also encourage students to demonstrate their understanding of the text and theories through multi-modal assignments which incorporate social sharing mediums which are familiar to students.
